though this position brought to an end her actual teaching in
the day school, yet work in the night school for a number
of years, kept alive her interest in this line of work and
enabled her to retain the skill which her course in training
had given her.

The foregoing are the main incidents of Miss Smith's
life briefly put. Much could be said that would enable one
to have a more intimate knowledge of the woman herself.
For instance, a mention of her attendance at such summer
schools as Hampton, Howard University and the Rochester
Business Institute, would at once bespeak her general desire
for improvement and her ambition to keep abreast of the
times in that particular field in which she has elected to
work. Her interest in humanity is attested to by activity in
such organizations as the Day Nursery Association, the Y.
W. C. A., the Empty Stocking and Fresh Air Circle, the
Woman's Auxiliary to the Maryland Home for Friendless
Colored Children, the Woman's Co-operative Civic League,
and others that are less well known. In a word. Miss Smith,
from a little rural maiden, has developed into a woman culti-
vated, broad, interested in all movements for good and a
living force with both old and young in the community of
which she is a well-known member.
