TO THE PUBLIC

AFTER a lapse of two and an half years, (since
the last Director was published,) we again present
our fellow-citizens as well as strangers, with an-

other edition of the "BALTIMORE DIRECTOR, FOR
1635—36." We will not dwell on the difficulties
of calling at every house in the city to obtain the

name, occupation, &c. of the tenant; of arranging
all those names for the press; the time necessary,
nor the expense of paper, printing, binding, &c.;
a little reflection will convince any individual that
it is a most arduous as well as unpleasant task; and
but one individual here who has performed it once
will again attempt it: However, we, with the assist-
ance of Mr. EDWARD ING, and three other gentle-
men, whom we have relied on for their known ac-
curacy, industry, and intelligence, have waded

through, and here's the book, we hope, as correct

as any such publication can reasonably expected.

Allowance must be made for the information given

by illiterate persons, servants, children, &c. the va-

rious spellings produring the same name, &c.

We have only printed 750 copies, and will have to

charge 25 cents advance from the old price, as we

expressed in our prospectus. We offer our thanks

to such as have encouraged our publication by sub-

scribing, and pledging themselves to purchase.

We add a Historical Sketch of Baltimore, and
a variety of important information, which will be
found very interesting not only to the old inhabi-

tants, but to an enterprising and enlightened com-
munity generally. R. J. HATCHETT.
