if the judges of election shall decide that a majority of the
votes cast are "For Water," then this Act shall be in full force
and virtue in the law, otherwise of no effect. The judges of
election shall, under their hands, immediately after said elec
tion, certify to the Mayor and City Council of Ellicott City the
result of said election.
SEC. 10. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 14.
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact with amendments Sections 124
and 125 of Article 14 of the Code of Public Local Laws, title
"Howard County," subtitle "Sheriff," and to repeal Sections
126 and 127 of Article 14 of the Code of Public Local Laws,
title "Howard County," subtitle "Sheriff."
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Sections 124 and 125 of Article 14 of the Code of
Public Local Laws, title "Howard County," subtitle "Sheriff,"
be and the same are hereby repealed and re-enacted with amend-
ments, and that Sections 126 and 127 of Article 14 of the Code
of Public Local Laws, title "Howard County," subtitle
"Sheriff," be and the same are hereby repealed.
124. Sheriff of Howard County shall receive an annual
salary of fifteen hundred dollars from and after the first day of
May, 1908, to be paid him in quarterly instalments of three
hundred and seventy-five dollars by the County Commissioners
of Howard County, and the said County Commissioners shall
pay to the Sheriff, upon the presentation of proper vouchers,
the actual car fare or team hire incurred by the Sheriff or his
deputies in conducting any prisoner to any institution to which
he has been committed by the proper tribunal, and he shall
appoint six deputies, one from each of the six election districts
of Howard County, and the County Commissioners of Howard
County shall pay said deputies an annual salary of one hun-
dred dollars each, to be paid in quarterly instalments of
twenty-five dollars. He shall collect all fees and charges to
which he may be entitled by law, and exercise all powers con-
ferred upon him by law to enforce the collection of same, and
shall at the end of each month during his term of office make
a sworn report of the same to the County Commissioners of
Howard County, in such form as said Commissioners may
direct, and pay over the same to the County Commissioners
of Howard County; whenever any Sheriff shall retire from
