of the world, and has been recognized by a number of Inter-
national Congresses; and
Whereas, This language is meeting the long-felt need for a
simplified yet superior medium of communication between
nations, not supplanting national tongues, but furnishing a
secondary language for all; therefore,
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 43 of Article 77 of the Code of Public Gen-
eral laws, title "Public Education," sub-title "Schools," be and
the same is hereby repealed and re-enacted with amendments
so as to read as follows:
43. In every district school there shall be taught orthog-
raphy, reading, writing, subjects for language training, Eng-
lish grammar, geography, arithmetic, history of the United
States, good behavior, the Constitution of the United States,
Constitution and history of Maryland, vocal music, drawing,
physiology, laws of health and domestic economy, civil govern-
ment, and the elements of agricultural science and the Interna-
tional language known as Esperanto may, in the discretion of
the State Board of Education, be added to the branches re-
quired to be taught in the State Normal Schools and in the
high schools of the various counties of the State.
SEC. 2. And be it enacted. That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 147.
AN ACT to add one new section to Article 77 of the Code of
Public General Laws of Maryland of 1904, title "Public Edu-
cation," sub-title "County Examiner," to come after Section
72 of said Article and to be known as Section 72A, and de-
signed to provide for the appointment of Grade Supervisors
for the public schools of Maryland.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by 'the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That one new section be added to Article 77 of the Code
of Public General Laws of Maryland of 1904, title "Public
Education," sub-title "County Exaaminers"; said section to
come after Section 72 of said Article, and to be known as Sev-
tion 72A, so as to read as follows:
72A. The Board of County School Commissioners of any
county may, in their discretion, appoint a Grade Supervisor;
provided that in counties where the number of teachers shall
exceed 150, one additional supervisor may be appointed; and
for every additional 100 teachers, one additional supervisor
