years to the first grade, without competitive examination, if
their services in the second grade have been satisfactory. Patrol-
men of the third and second grades to be known as probation
officers and they shall not be advanced as aforesaid except after
examination by said Board of Police Commissioners as to their
records, efficiency and conduct, and unless they are certified to
said Board by the police physicians as physically qualified to
continue to discharge the duties of a patrolman.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That until January 1st,
1919, the officers and men in this act mentioned shall continue
to receive the pay heretofore provided for them by law, but the
Board of Police Commissioners, in the estimate to be certified
by them to the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore of the ex-
penses of their department for the next ensuing fiscal year, shall
include an item sufficient to cover the increases in pay by this
Act provided for the period from the first day of June 1918, to
the 31st. day of December, 1918, inclusive, and it shall be the
duty of the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore to include the
same in the next levy made by it for the expenses of the Police
Department of Baltimore City, and to collect the same as part
of the Police Tax, and to pay the same on January 1st, 1919,
upon proper requisition, to the Police Board; and thereupon
the Police Board shall pay to the officers and men the increase
in their pay hereby authorized for the period from the first day
of June 1918, to the 31st day of December 1918, inclusive; and
beginning with the first day of January 1919, the compensations
herein specified shall be regularly paid.
SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect from and after June 1, 1918.

CHAPTER 130.
AN ACT to repeal Section 56 of Article 35 of the Code
(Bagby's) of Public General Laws of Maryland, title "Evi-
dence, " sub-title "Public Statutes and Office Copies and
Official Certificates, " and to reenact the same with amend-
ments.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 56 of Article 35 of the Code (Bagby's) of
Public General Laws of Maryland, title "Evidence, " sub-title
