aries, payable every two weeks: The marshal of police shall re-
ceive thirty-six hundred dollars per annum; the deputy mar-
shal of police three thousand dollars per annum; the captain
assigned to have charge of the detectives' office shall receive
fifty dollars per week, and all other captains shall each receive
forty dollars per week; the lieutenants assigned to have charge
of the Bureau of Identification, the horse and vehicle service,
and the signal and telephone service, shall receive thirty-five
dollars per week; and all other lieutenants and detectives shall
each receive thirty-four dollars per week; each round sergeant,
twenty-nine dollars per week; each sergeant twenty-six dollars
per week; except such sergeants as may be now or hereafter as-
signed by the said Board of Police Commissioners of Baltimore
City to do clerical duty at Police Headquarters of Baltimore
City, and the sergeant assigned to duty at the Juvenile Court of
Baltimore City, not exceeding seven, who shall each receive the
sum of thirty dollars per week; each turnkey, twenty-four dol-
lars per week; each patrolman, twenty-four dollars per week,
except as provided in Section 745 1/2 of this Act; each station-
house clerk shall receive twenty-six dollars per week; and each
clerk not otherwise provided for in this section shall receive
$25. 00 per week, and each signal and telephone operator shall
receive eighteen dollars per week; provided, however, that noth-
ing herein contained shall be construed to legislate out of office
any police officer, detective or officer of police now on the force
or any clerk or any appointee or any employee of the Board of
Police Commissioners of Baltimore City.

745 1/2. The patrolmen provided for in Section 745 of this
Act shall hereafter be appointed by the Board of Police Com-
missioners in the manner following: Said patrolmen shall con-
sist of three grades; all patrolmen who shall have served for
two years or more on said force shall be members of the first
grade and receive the salary of twenty-four dollars per week;
all patrolmen who shall have served, on said force less than two
years and more than one year shall be members of the second
grade and receive the salary of twenty-one dollars per week; all
patrolmen who shall have served on the said force for less than
one year shall be members of the third grade and receive the
salary of nineteen dollars per week. Third grade patrolmen shall
be entitled to be advanced to the second grade at the expiration of
the first year, without competitive examination, if they shall have
performed their duties satisfactory. The second grade patrol-
men shall be entitled to be advanced at the expiration of two
