RESOLUTIONS. 1501

United States to introduce, vote for and urge the passage of a law
to restore to the gold and silver coin of the United States the In-
scription "In God we Trust," which was recently removed by order
of the President of the United States.

Whereas the said inscription is endeared to the good people of
Maryland by cherished and patriotic, historic associations of an
enduring character, and acquiescence in its removal, without protest,
from the gold and silver of our country, the symbol and token of her
wealth, current among the people at home and the nations of earth, will
be interpreted as showing the decline of patriotism, morality and
religion; and

Whereas the said inscription expresses the faith of our people in the
Divine Being who hath signally overruled and advocated the high
destiny of our State and country, and also their abiding trust in His
guiding and protecting Providence forever; now. therefore, be it

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the Senators
and Representatives of the State in the Congress of the United States
be and they are hereby requested to introduce, vote for and urge the
passage of a law to restore to the gold and silver coin of the United
States the inscription "In God we Trust.''

And be it resolved, That a copy of this resolution, duly signed by
the Governor of the State, the President of the Senate and the Speaker
of the House of Delegates be forwarded to the Senators and Repre-
sentatives from the State and be by them presented in the Senate and
House of Representatives of the United States, respectively.

JOINT RESOLUTION No. 4.

Commemorating the eminent services rendered the State of Maryland

by the Honorable Arthur Pue German and the Honorable Elihn

Emory Jackson.

Whereas since the adjournment of the last General Assembly of
this State the people of this State have been called upon to mourn the
loss of several of their most honored citizens and devoted public ser-
vants, among whom we number the Honorable -irthur Pue German,
who had represented his native county, Howard, in each branch of the
General Assembly, had presided over the House of Delegates in 1872;
had for twenty-two years represented this State in the Congress of the
United States as Senator from this State, and had held other Important
positions in the State Government; and the Honorable Elihu Emory
Jackson, who had also represented his county, Wicomico, in each
branch of the General Assembly of this State, and for a time was
President of the State Senate, and who filled the office of Governor
from 1888 to 1892; each of whom had devoted their lives to the service
of their State in a manner highly acceptable to the people of the State
for their faithfulness, zeal and good .judgment in the conduct of the
several offices filled by them; therefore

Be it resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That in the
death of the said Arthur Pue Gormau and Elihu Emory Jackson, this
State has suffered irreparable loss In that the people have been deprived
of the services and counsel of men of marked ability, devotion to duty
and high personal integrity;

Resolved further, That as a mark of respect to the said deceased

citizens, a copy of these resolutions be bound with the Acts of Assembly

for this session, 1908, and that copies thereof, properly engrossed, and

under the Great Seal, be forwarded by the Secretary of. the Senate to

' the families of each of the said deceased citizens.
