directed to pay to the visitors and governors of Washington
College, to be applied to aid in paying the cost of the erection of
Normal Hall, the new building recently erected by said college,
the sum of twenty-five hundred dollars on the first day of
June, eighteen hundred and ninety-eight, and the sum of
twenty-five hundred dollars on the first day of June, eighteen
hundred and ninety-nine.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the treasurer, on the war-
rant of the Comptroller, be and he is hereby authorized and
directed, in addition to the sum now annually paid to Washing-
ton College, to pay to the visitors and governors of said
college, the further sum of fourteen hundred dollars annually
on and after the first day of June, eighteen hundred and
ninety-eight, in consideration of the fourteen free scholarships
hereinbefore authorized.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take eSect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 294.
AN ACT authorizing the appointment of a commission to
ascertain and mark the positions occupied by Maryland troops
on the battlefield of Antietam, and to appropriate a sum of
money therefor.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the Governor be and he is hereby authorized to

appoint a commission of nine persons, six of whom shall have
served in the Union Army, and three of whom shall have
served in the Confederate Army, and all of whom shall have
participated in the battle of Antietam, whose duty it shall be
to co-operate with the Antietam Battlefield Board, in ascer-
taining and marking the positions occupied iu this battle, by
each regiment and battery or other military organization from
this State which was engaged there, whether in the Union or
Confederate army, and for this purpose they shall avail them-
selves of the knowledge and assistance of such regiments,
batteries and other organizations.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the sum of twelve thousand
five hundred dollars be and the same is hereby appropriated,
or so much thereof as may be necessary, for the erection of a
State Monument to the Maryland soldiers of both sides en-
gaged in said battle, and the erection of markers and tablets
