And the directors of said bank may, at their discretion, pay to
such minor or female covert depositor such sum or sums of
maney as may be due to him or her, and the check, receipt or
acquittance of such minor or female covert shall be valid, any
law of this State to the contrary notwithstanding.
SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That said company may receive

upon storage, deposit or otherwise, merchandise special, plate,
bullion, stocks, promissory notes, certificates and evidences of
debt, contracts and all other personal property, and advance
money thereupon on such terms as may be established or ap-
proved by said company, that in all cases in which public
officers or municipal or private corporations are authorized to
deposit money, stocks, bonds or evidences of debt, such deposits
by such officers or corporations may be made with said com-
pany.

Effective.

SEC. 7. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 293.
AN ACT to provide for fourteen free scholarships at Wash-
ington College, and aid in the erection of an additional
building, and appropriate a sum of money therefor.
SECTION 1. B e it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the visitors and governors of Washington College

books to one male or female student from each and every
county on the western shore of the State of Maryland, either
in the normal or collegiate department of said college.
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That students wishing to secure

scholarship with the Board of County School Commissioners
of which he is a resident, together with a certificate of his or
her good physical health and good moral character. And said
Board of County School Commissioners shall cause all such
applicants to be examined on such subjects or studies as" the
principal of Washington College may suggest, and shall make
the appointment after such competitive examination is held,
and shall certify such appointment to the principal of said
college in writing.
SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the treasurer, on the war-
rant of the Comptroller, be and is hereby authorized and
