LLOYD LOWNDES, ESQUIRE, GOVERNOR.

thereto additional sections to be known as Sections fifty-
eight A and fifty-eight B, and to repeal all Acts or parts of
Acts inconsistent therewith.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted Ity the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That sections forty-nine, fifty, fifty-two, fifty-eight, sixty-
three, seventy -eight "E" and ninety-two of Article one of the

Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland, entitled "Allegany
County," sub-title "Cumberland," be and they are hereby
repealed, and sections forty-nine, fifty, fifty-two, fifty-eight,
sixty-three and seventy-eight E, be and they are hereby re-
enacted to read as follows : And that said Article one of the
said Public Local Laws be and the same is hereby further
amended by adding thereto new sections to follow after section
fifty-eight to be known as sections fifty-eight A, and fifty-
eight "B."
ELECTIONS.
49. The City Council shall have power to pass all ordinances
for conducting the elections herein provided for, or which may

be hereafter authorized to be held, and for making returns
thereof ; provided, that duplicate copies of said returns shall
be made out, one copy of which shall be filed with the clerk
of the City Council, and the other with the clerk of the Cir-
cuit Court for Allegany county ; and whenever the said City
Council shall provide by suitable ordinances for the holding of
elections in said city under the powers hereby granted, then
said elections shall thereafter be held under said ordinances ;
but in passing said ordinances and providing for the conducting
of said elections and the registration of voters, the said City
Council shall conform as nearly as possible to the general aims
and purposes of the General Election Law of the State of
Maryland. The City Council shall have power to pass ordi-
nances for the election by the City Council and qualification of
a city treasurer and a collector, and such other officers, agents
and servants as they may deem necessary from time to time;
and for the appointment by the Mayor of such other officers,
agents or servants as may be deemed necessary ; and to fix
their compensation, to define the duties of the officers of said
corporation, require bonds and fix penalties thereof for the
faithful performance of their respective duties, and to require
bonds for the performance of any and all contracts entered
into with said city.

50. The inhabitants of the city of Cumberland, residents
thereof for one year previous to the municipal elections of said
