CHAPTER 521.
AN ACT to appropriate a sum of money for the payment of
a salary to the second clerk in the State Tax Commissioner's
Office from August 1, 1897, to September 30, 1898.

Preamble.
|
WHEREAS, Since the enactment of the assessment laws of
1896 the necessary clerical labor for the due execution of the
duties of the office of the State Tax Commissioner has required
the employment of two clerks, and will require the employ-
ment of the same clerical force hereafter; and

WHEREAS, Since the 17th day of April, 1896, two clerks
have been employed in said office, each at a salary of one hun-
dred dollars per month ; and
WHEREAS, For the payment of the salary of the first of these

clerks up to September 30, 1898, the end of the present fiscal
year, adequate provision has been made in the General Appro-
priation Act of 1896, chapter 347, but for the payment of the
salary of the second of these clerks it appears that inadequate
provision was made by section 198, chapter 120 of the Acts of
1896 ; and as there is now due and unpaid and without an
appropriation from August 1, 1897, the sum of one hundred
dollars per month, or twelve hundred dollars per annum ; there-
fore,

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the sum of fourteen hundred dollars be and is
hereby appropriated for the payment of a salary of one hun-
dred dollars per month to the second clerk in the State Tax
Commissioner's office from August 1, 1897, to September 30,
1898, the same having been recommended by the officers of
the Treasury Department.

Effective.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 522.
AN ACT to provide for the building and furnishing and the
securing of lots of land for the erection of three new school
houses in the first precinct, the Fifth Election District of
Anne Arundel County, and to authorize and require the
Board of School Commissioners of Anne Arundel Connty
to borrow money on the credit of Anne Arundel County for
that purpose, and also to raise a sum of money sufficient to
