of the wards thereof for fifteen days prior to any regular elec-
tion to be held in said town shall, on the first Monday of
August, in the year 1898, and every second year thereafter, on
the same day, at such place as the council shall designate,
between the hours of seven o'clock A. M. and six o'clock P. M.
elect one person, at least thirty years of age, Mayor of said
town, and three persons, one from each ward, not less than
twenty-one years of age, on the first Monday of August, in
the year 1898, for one year, and three persons, one from each
ward, not less than twenty-one years of age, for two years,
each year thereafter, councilmen of said town ; all of whom
shall be bona fide residents and owners of real estate in said
town at the time of their election. The Mayor of said town
shall receive for his services such compensation, not exceeding
one hundred dollars per year, as may be determined, from time
to time, by the council, and the members of the council thereof
shall receive for their services such compensation, respectively,
not exceeding twenty-five dollars per year, as may be deter-
mined from time to time by the council.
4. The Governor shall, on or before the first Monday of May,

in the year 1898, and every two years thereafter, appoint one
"person as officer of registration of said town of Brunswick,
who shall be a resident and qualified voter of said town at
the time of his appointment, and such officer of registration
shall revise and correct the lists of qualified voters as con-
tained in the registration books of the respective wards,
registering therein all persons who shall have the qualifica-
tions to entitle them to vote for Mayor and councilmen of
said town, and who shall apply in person for the purpose of
being registered, and striking therefrom the names of all per-
sons who have died, removed away or become for any reason dis-
qualified to vote at any election to be held therein. But before
registering any person as a qualified voter, the officer of regis-
tration shall administer to him the following oath : "I do
solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will true answer make to all

questions necessary to ascertain my qualifications or disquali-
fications under the Constitution and laws of Maryland and the
charter of the town of Brunswick, to be registered as a quali-
fied voter therein," but nothing in said oath or affirmation con-
tained shall be construed to authorize said register to ask any
question touching any cause of disqualification not expressly
enumerated in the Constitution of Maryland or the United
States, and no person shall be permitted to register who is dis-
qualified under the provisions of the Constitution of Mary-
land.
