LAWS OF MARYLAND.

Chanter 543.

AN ACT to protect and preserve the fish in the
waters of Washington county, Maryland.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General As-
sembly of Maryland, That it shall not be lawful
for any person to catch or kill, or attempt to
catch or kill, in the waters of Washington
county, or have in possession in said county,

it is unlawful.

any small mouth black bass, large mouth or
Oswego black bass, red-eye or rock bass, calico
or strawberry bass, warmouth or goggle-eye
bass, blue or copper-nose, wall-eye or yellow
pike, bullheads or yellow perch in any manner,
between the first day of April and the thirtieth
day of June in each year, both days inclusive; nor
shall any person, at anytime, catch or take from
the waters of said county, or have in possession,
or sell, or offer for sale within said county any
small mouth black bass, large mouth or Oswego
black bass, wall-eye or yellow pike, cat-fish,
bullheads or yellow perch, of less than ten
inches in length from end of snout to the end of
caudal fin, nor shall any person, at any time,
catch or take from the waters of said county, or
have in possession, or sell, or offer for sale, any
red-eye or rock bass, calico or strawberry bass,
warmouth or goggle-eye bass, or blue or copper-
nose of less than six inches in length from end
of snout to the end of the caudal fin, any per-
son who shall catch or take from said waters
any fish mentioned in this section of less length
than is herein specified, shall immediately
place such fish back in the waters from which

it was taken and shall use due care not to
kill or injure the same. Any person viola-
ting any provision of this section shall, upon
conviction before any justice of the peace of
said county, forfeit and pay a fine of five
dollars for attempting to catch any of said
fish, as herein forbidden, and five dollars
for each fish so caught, taken, killed, sold or
offered for sale, or had in possession ; and, in
default of payment of such fine and costs of
prosecution, shall be committed to the jail of
said county for a period of not less than five
nor more than thirty days.
