LAWS OF MARYLAND,
guard the public buildings at night, at a salary

Appoint other
officers ,

of fifty dollars per month ; one person to act as
day watchman and policeman, and to perform
such other duties as the superintendent of public
buildings and grounds may direct, at a salary of
fifty dollars per month ; a suitable person to be
keeper of the steam-house and furnaces, of the
public buildings in the state house circle, and one
assistant keeper, each at a salary of fifty dollars
per month, all of whom shall hold office at the
pleasure of the governor ; and the treasurer,
upon the warrant of the 'comptroller, shall pay
the sums mentioned in this section to the per-
son who shall be appointed by the governor as
aforesaid.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the duties of the
superintendent of public buildings and grounds
shall be as follows :
1. He shall keep a full and complete inventory
of all movable property belonging to the state, in

copy of which shall be filed with the secretary
of state, and shall deliver said inventory, to-
gether with the property, to his successor in
office, and shall have charge of and be responsi-
ble for the safe keeping of said property.

and watching of the same, and every part thereof ;
and shall keep clean and in proper order, the
hall or entrance to the state house, the senate
chamber and hall of the house of delegates,
and the committee rooms ; and during the recess
of the general assembly keep them thoroughly
cleaned and ventilated, and before each session
arrange the furniture, carpets and desks, and pre-
pare both chambers for the assembling of the
legislature.
3. He shall have entire charge of the water-

4. He shall take charge of, and keep in order,
the fire apparatus belonging to the state.
5. He shall have charge of the grounds at-
