Male citizens
to work on
streets.

under sixty years, to be enrolled, and shall compel all such
able bodied citizens to work on the streets and highways of
the said town, under the supervision of the bailiff, at least one
and not more than two days in the year, or furnish a substi-
tute.

Penalty.

34. If any able-bodied person as aforesaid, after having
been notified in writing two days previous to the day ap-
pointed by the bailiff for work on the said streets and high-
way, shall fail to appear or provide some one in his stead, or
pay the sum of one dollar for each day, on or before the day
named for his appearance, unless for good cause excused, the
said person shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon con-
viction thereof before a justice of the peace in the said town,
shall be fined not less than two dollars, for the use of the com-
missioners of the said town; and the said justice of the peace
may commit him to a lock-up or other place of incarceration
of the said town, or to the county jail of Wicomico county,
until the fine and costs are paid; but no person shall be com-
mitted for more than two days for each offence or day.

Effective.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 450.

AN ACT to repeal Section 11 of Article 44 of the Code of
Public General Laws, and to re-enact the same with amend-
ments.

Repeal.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That section 11 of article 44 of the Code of
Public General Laws, be and the same is hereby repealed and
re-enacted so as to read as follows :

Accommoda-
tion for
pauper
lunatics.

11. They shall provide accommodation for at least four
hundred pauper lunatics of this State, who may be sent to the
said hospital for curative treatment; which number shall be
from time to time apportioned by them among the several
counties and the city of Baltimore, according to the popula-
tion as ascertained by the preceding census. The sum of
money to be paid by the several counties, respectively, for the
