CHAPTER 332.
AN ACT to incorporate the Gynecian and Lying-in Hospital
of the State of Maryland.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Lennox Birckhead, J. Gorham Moale, Adolph
Dresel, Benjamin F. Walker and Henry S. Furlong, of Balti-
more city and State of Maryland, and their associates and suc-
cessors, be and they are hereby constituted a body corporate by

the name of the Gynecian and Lying-in Hospital of the State
of Maryland, and by that name shall have perpetual succession,
and shall sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded in any
court whatsoever, and have and use a common seal, and the
same alter at pleasure; and the said corporation is authorized
and empowered to establish, maintain and conduct in the city
of Baltimore and Baltimore county, dispensaries and hospitals
where indigent females and children of Baltimore city and
the counties of Maryland or elsewhere, may be admitted, sup-
ported and maintained, and receive medical treatment in
accordance with the principles and practice of homeopathy.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the physicians and sur-
geons comprising the medical and surgical staff of said dispen-
saries and hospitals are hereby created a medical and surgical
faculty for the purpose of teaching the principles and prac-
tice of surgery, gynecology, paedology and midwifery, and
the post operative treatment and nursing of such cases of sick-
ness or disability, as well as the care of infants and children
during their early life.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the Gynecian and Lying-in
Hospital of the State of Maryland be and it is hereby author-
ized and empowered to matriculate students, male or female,
who are desirous of qualifying themselves to serve as trained
nurses and midwives in the branches embraced within the
curriculum of said studies taught by said hospital, and to issue
its diploma, certifying that such students who have undergone
the necessary apprenticeship, and who shall, upon examination
by the medical and surgical faculty of said hospital, be found
qualified and competent to practice the art of nursing and
midwifery.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the operations of said
corporation shall be carried on in the city of Baltimore and
Baltimore county, and that the principal office shall be in the
city of Baltimore.
