dollars for each offence.

60. The provisions of this act shall not apply to any mid-
wife, or person who may render gratuitous services in case of
emergency.

Exceptions.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 218.

AN ACT to enable the qualified voters of election district
number four, in Frederick County, to determine by ballot
whether spirituous or fermented liquors or lager beer shall
be sold in said district.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted ly the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the question of whether or not any person
or persons, or any house or any corporation may be licensed to
sell spirituous or fermented liquors or lager beer in election
district number four of Frederick county, shall be submitted
to the registered qualified voters of the said district, in the
said county, at a special election to be held on the third
Tuesday in April, in the year eighteen hundred and ninety-
four, at the usual place for holding elections in said district;
and the ballots for or against such sale, shall have printed or
written on them the words: "For the sale of spirituous or
fermented liquors or lager beer, " or "Against the sale of spirit-
uous or fermented liquors or lager beer, " and that the ballots so
cast shall be carefully counted by the judges of said election.
who shall within three days thereafter make a written return of
such vote to the clerk of the Circuit Court for Frederick
county, and said clerk shall record said returns among the
records of his office; and if it shall appear that a majority of
votes east shall have been against the sale of spirituous or
fermented liquors or lager beer, then the clerk of said court
shall prepare a certificate proclaiming the result of such
election in said district, and cause said certificate to be
published once in one newspaper published in said county;
land the polls shall be kept open at said election from eight
o'clock A. M. until six o'clock P. M.
