shall be adjudged to pay the costs and stand committed
until such fine and costs are paid, and he shall be bound to
render proper service at or about the first of January in each
year, beginning with the year 1907; the town clerk shall
make out a list of all persons who, on the first day of the
next May, will be liable to render service on the streets of
the town, and he shall as soon thereafter as convenient
deliver said list to the policeman; each person named in said
list, who shall pay the policeman the sum of one dollar in
lieu of performing said service upon the streets, shall receive
a receipt from the policeman exempting from service for the
year beginning on the first day of May as aforesaid. Begin-
