GAZETTEER OF MARYLAND

Figures in parentheses ( ) pertaining to population, elevation bearing and distance to
nearest place are estimated.

The descriptive terms "city," "town," "village," etc. which immediately follow the place
name in bold letters were determined by their population: places having populations from 1
to 300 persons were designated as "village"; 300 or above were designated as "town." In cases
where the Charter of Incorporation specifically designates a place as a "city" or "town" the
designated term was used in the text. Population figures shown without parentheses are 1940
census figures. Those figures in parentheses are estimated.

The abbreviations which appear in capitals at the end of an individual listing refer to
quadrangle designations established by the U. S. Geological Survey. (See frontispiece)

For the sources of information and key to railroad abbreviations and quadrangle designa-
tions see Appendix, pages 237 and 238.
