life-size bust and pedestal of Admiral Wintield Scott
Schley, and to authorize the appointment of a commission
for that purpose.
WHEREAS, Rear-Admiral (then Commodore) Winfield Scott

Schley, of the United States Navy, a native and citizen of
Maryland, was in command of the squadron off Santiago,
which, on the third day of July, in the year eighteen hundred
and ninety-eight, destroyed the Spanish fleet; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of the General Assembly of

Maryland that the memory of the said Winfield Scott Schley
shall, in some appropriate way, be perpetuated, so that he may
be recognized by future generations as the hero of one of the
greatest naval battles in which this country ever engaged ; and
WHEREAS, Ernest W. Keyser, a Maryland sculptor, now

residing in Washington, is engaged in making a life-size bust,
in bronze, of the said Admiral Schley;
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of

Maryland, That a commission, to consist of three persons, to
be named by the Governor, be appointed, whose duty it shall
be to purchase of the said Ernest W. Keyser a life-size bust
in bronze of Admiral Schley, together with a suitable pedestal,
at a price not exceeding three thousand dollars, which shall be
erected in some suitable place in the new State building in
the city of Annapolis, to be determined by said commission,
the style and workmanship of said bust and pedestal to be
approved by said commission.
SEO. 2. And be it further enacted. That the sum of three
