tion shall take and subscribe to the oaths of office, within
thirty days after their respective appointments as aforesaid
before the clerk of the Circuit Court of Howard county, in
case of a vacancy or vacancies in any of the offices mentioned,
as aforesaid, in the section, by death or otherwise, after said
first day of January, in such year as aforesaid mentioned, said
vacancy or vacancies shall, at any time thereafter be filled by
appointment by the Governor. And in case of a vacancy or
vacancies in the offices of any judge or judges or clerk or
clerks of election, by death or otherwise, after said ten days
before said day of election; said vacancy or vacancies shall be
filled by appointments by said supervisors of election.

Delivery of
book.

56 A. The clerk of the Circuit Court for Howard county
shall deliver to the return judge of election, -on the morning
of the day of said election, said book of registration, to be
used at the polls of election upon receipting for the same to
said clerk.

Duties of
election
officers.

56 B. The duties of such officers as are heretofore named,
shall be the same as the duties of corresponding officers of elec-
tions for members of the General Assembly of Maryland,
except as provided by this act; and said election for Mayor
and members of the City Council of Ellicott City, shall be
conducted in every respect as elections for members of the
General Assembly of Maryland are conducted, except as pro-
vided by this act.

Result of
election.

56 C. Immediately upon the closing of the polls of any elec-
tion for Mayor and members of the city council of Ellicott
City, the judges of election shall proceed to count the ballots
cast and ascertain the result of said election, and the person
receiving the greatest number of votes cast for Mayor shall be
declared Mayor of Ellicott City, and the six persons receiving
the greatest number of votes cast for members of the City Council
shall be declared elected members of the City Council of Ellicott
City; and the said judges shall certify the result of such elec-
tion to the clerk of the Circuit Court for Howard county, and
the return judges shall deposit with said clerk the books of
registration and the returns of the election within three days
after said election; and the said clerk shall issue a proclamation
of the result of such election and insert a copy of said procla-
mation in some newspaper published in said city within one
