of the insane asylum loan; a tax of ten and one-half cents on
each hundred dollars, to aid in support of the public schools,
to be distributed according to law among the several counties
and the city of Baltimore; and a tax of two cents on each
hundred dollars, to defray the cost of supplying books for the
use of the children in the public schools of this State; making
an aggregate of seventeen cents and three-fourths of a cent on
each one hundred dollars. And the Comptroller of the Treasury
shall levy the same State taxes on the shares of capital stock
of all banks, State and National, and other incorporated insti-
tutions and companies of this State, the shares of whose cap-
ital stock are liable, by law, to assessment and taxation.

Effective.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act take effect from
the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 166.

AN ACT to repeal Chapter 391 of the Acts of the General
Assembly of Maryland, session of 1892, and to provide for
the issue of five hundred thousand dollars, Maryland State
bonds, to be used for the purpose of construction and equip,
ment of the extension of the Maryland Penitentiary, at a
rate not higher than 3.65 per centum interest per annum,
and to provide a sinking fund for the payment of said
bonds.

Preamble.


WHEREAS, By the acts of the General Assembly of Mary-
land, acts of 1890, chapters 200 and 202, and the acts of 1892,
chapter 391, certain appropriation was made for the purchase
of the surrounding property, looking to the construction of a
larger and more permanent building for the uses of the Mary-
land penitentiary; and

Preamble.

WHEREAS, The required property, under and by virtue of
the powers conferred in the acts aforesaid has been acquired
and paid for, and a part of the buildings of the said extension
are now in course of erection,

Repeal.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That chapter 391 of the acts of the General Assembly
of Maryland, session of 1892, be and the same is hereby
repealed.
