LAWS OF MARYLAND.

application; that is to say, if such other door shall not be se-
curely and permanently fastened, walled or ceiled up so that
ingress or egress thereby cannot be made, except in case of
hotels, which are permitted to have two doors, as hereinbefore
provided, then such person shall be deemed to have violated
this law, and on conviction, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor,
and shall be liable to any one of the penalties of section seventy-
one of this law.

Duty of
sheriff, con-
stable, etc.

75. It shall be the duty of the sheriff and deputy sheriff,
and all constables of said county, and of the bailiffs and police
officers of any incorporated town of said county, to enforce
the provisions of this act, and a failure to do so shall be a
misdemeanor, and on conviction thereof, any such officer shall
be fined not less than twenty five dollars and be confined in
the county jail until such fine and costs are paid.

Application
of fines.

76. Three-fourths of all fines and forfeitures under this act
shall be paid to the informer, and the balance shall be paid
to the Board of County School Commissioners for the use of
the schools of said county.

Effective.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 136 1/2.

AN ACT to waive and release all the liens of the State of
Maryland, upon the corpus of the Chesapeake and Ohio
Canal, and upon its tolls and revenues in favor of certain
creditors of the Canal Company.

Preamble.

WHEREAS, The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company is
now engaged in litigation in the Circuit Court for Washington
county, sitting as a Court of Equity, the same being Nos.
4191 and 4198 equity in said court; and the Chesapeake and
Ohio Canal, and all the property of said company is, by the
authority of said court, in the hands of trustees or receivers ;
and,

Preamble.

WHEREAS, Prior to the order of said court, placing the
property of said company under the control of said trustees,
said company had become indebted to various persons for labor
done for said company in, upon and about said canal, and for
