LLOYD LOWNDES, ESQUIRE, GOVERNOR.

on George Ifert's land, north forty-five degrees, west seven
hundred and one and one-half feet to a stake on George Ifert's
land aforesaid, thence south forty-five degrees, west three hun-
dred feet to the place of beginning; and the police powers of
said corporation shall extend to the distance of one-half mile
in all directions beyond said taxable limits.

353. The male citizens of Middletown at the age of twenty-
one years and upwards, who shall have resided within the tax-
able limits of said town for twelve months next preceding the
election, shall elect by ballot on the first Monday of April
annually, a burgess and five commissioners, who shall have
resided within said town for twelve months next preceding the
election; the said Burgess shall receive the sum of twenty-five
dollars, and each of the said tive Commissioners the sum of fif-
teen dollars as compensation for their respective services,
to be paid annually out of the funds of said municipal cor-
poration.

354. All elections shall be held and conducted as shall
from time to time be directed by the ordinances of the corpo-
ration, not inconsistent with the sub-title of this Article.

355. The burgess shall qualify by taking and subscribing
the oath of office before the clerk of the Circuit Court for

Frederick county, or before one of his sworn deputies; and
before proceeding to act, shall give bond to the Burgess and
Commissioners of Middletown, with securities to be approved
by the commissioners, in the sum of five hundred dollars, for
the faithful discharge of his duties; and the commissioners
and all other officers of said corporations, before entering
upon the duties of their respective offices, shall severally take
and subscribe before the Burgess, the following oath: I,

office of ———— to the best of my knowledge and ability, with-
out favor, affection or partiality, so help me God; if the per-
sons elected Burgess and Commissioners, respectively, or any of
them, shall fail to take the oath prescribed in this section
within ten days after notice of their election shall have been
communicated to them in writing, by the person who, under
the ordinances of the town, may be appointed to held such
election, the said person or persons so appointed, within five
days thereafter, shall order an election to fill the vacancy or
vacancies caused by such failure to qualify.
