liday streets in said city, so as to admit of the passing at the
same time in different directions, of carriages and persons on
loot, would be of great public utility, and praying that a law
to that end might pass, and the prayer of the petitioners ap-
pearing reasonable — Therefore,

Commissioners

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land That Stewart Brown, John B, Morris, James Hutton,
John Bradford and Henry White, or a majority of them, be,
and they are hereby appointed commissioners to widen
Orange Alley in the city of Baltimore, in the manner herein-
after provided, and in case a vacancy should occur in said
board of commissioners, by death, resignation or a refusal to
act, the remaining members thereof who may consent to act,
shall supply such vacancy by a new appointment; and a majo-
rity of the commissioners shall be competent to the perform-
ance of the duties of said board,

Authorisedd to wi-
den, &c.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That said commissioners be, and
they are hereby authorised and empowered to widen said al-
ley, by adding thereto, eighteen feet in width from North
street to Holliday street on and along the north line or side
of said alley, according to its present location; and the said
commissioners shall cause a plot of said alley so to be
widened to be made, and shall return the same under their
hands and seals, to be lodged in the office of the register of
the city of Baltimore, there to remain as a part of said city.

Notice of assessing
damages.

SEC. 3, And be it enacted That the said commissioners after
having surveyed the ground, and designated the said alley
according to the location thereof, as hereby authorised, shall
after giving ten days notice in two of the newspapers printed
in the city of Baltimore, proceed to ascertain and determine
what damages will be sustained by the owners of property
affected by the operation of this act, taking into consideration
all advantages and disadvantages.

SEC, 4. And be tt enacted, That the said commissioners after
having ascertained the damages as aforesaid, and added there-
to the commission allowed to the collector as hereinafter
provided, and an estimate of the probable expense of remov-
ing the obstructions from the ground to be used in the widen-
ing of said alley, shall levy the damages to be sustained and
the expenses to be incurred by reason thereof, upon the pro-
perty bent fit ted by the widening of said alley, having regard
to all circumstances; and having compleated the said estimate
of damages and expenses and the assessment to meet the
sanity the said commissioners shall make a full and particular
return thereof, under their hands and seals to the office of the
register of the city of Baltimore, designating the property as-
sessed as benefitted, as well as the property damaged, and the
names of the proprietors of both species of property, as fully
as they can ascertain the same, which return so far as it con-
tains a list of the names of persons damaged and benefitted,
and the amount of each ones damage and benefit respectively,
shall be published by the register within five days after receipt
