FINDING AIDS
PLATS
1. Organized and indexed plats filed in a map case moved
from the old Land Office. They were correlated, as far as pos-
sible, with the appropriate records. The majority of the plats
resulted from Chancery Court cases involving settlements of
estates, from Caveat Proceedings on lands to be patented, and
from orders to survey confiscated lands by the Commissioners
for Confiscated British Property. Others were originally filed
with Certificates of Survey, Patented and Unpatented. It ap-
pears that these plats, because of their large sizes, were removed
from their original record series.
2. Organized and indexed Resurvey Plats. The basic facts
cited above pertain to these records, except that the plats re-
sulted from cases in the Provincial Court and the General Court.

COURT OF APPEALS BRIEFS, 1830-1886
The Court of Appeals Briefs had been filed roughly by court
terms, but without any other arrangement. The names of the
principals involved in each case had been written on the folders,
but the docket number and the court term were not recorded.
This made it difficult to locate the briefs for an individual case.
By consulting the dockets of the court, which are indexed,
we were able to identify the cases and add the docket number and
the court term to the information already written on the folder.
We also consolidated all of the papers relating to each case in a
single folder and rearranged the folders, so that the Briefs for
