Somerset .................... 1851-1949

It will be recalled that except in the few instances noted above,
the county and its land records antedate 1851. Our project began in
general at that date because the records from the first date of the county
to 1851 were microfilmed earlier by the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints and positive copies furnished us.

REPAIR AND BINDING

We have finally come to the point where the prerogative court
probate records in volume series have for the most part been rehabili-
tated. They are the records in daily use by genealogists and they have
in the past given us most concern. Our efforts are now turned almost
exclusively to the county records, which, while less used, are quite as
fragile as were the state records.

The number of books bound was distinctly less than last year or
any recent year. This is a penalty one must pay for having a one-man,
or as in this case, a one-woman bindery. Miss Goldsborough had the
misfortune to suffer a prolonged illness and as a result only forty-nine
record books were bound instead of the usual seventy.

The number of pages laminated also decreased by several hundred,
but this was due to a rather unusual task assigned to Mrs. Hiltabidle;
we received some 4,206 original wills from Montgomery County and
because of their seals and other impediments, required more painstak-
ing work.
