INDEX HOLDINGS, SEPTEMBER 1959
This twelve-page mimeographed list of Indexes at the Hall of
Records (Bulletin No. 11) is a revised version of Bulletin No. 10.
Previously we had only listed indexes for which we had records. We
did this because it was difficult to explain indexes—mainly old ones
salvaged in the counties—which referred to records elsewhere. This
led to misunderstandings. In this revision we decided that the dates
and forms of both the records and their indexes held at the Hall of
Records should be listed. The usefulness of such a list we thought
would be worth the inconvenience of an occasional misunderstanding.
THE COUNTY COURTHOUSES AND RECORDS OF MARYLAND, PART
ONE: THE COURTHOUSES,
Publication No. 12 of the Hall of Records Commission.
This volume, which has been in preparation for some years,
appeared February 8, 1960. The purpose of this study is to account for
all of the courthouses ever built in Maryland. The emphasis is on the
courthouse as the seat of county government, the repository for its
records. Architectural details, costs, architects, builders and workmen
are included because information of this kind is now much sought after
by historical agencies, organizations and individuals concerned with
restoration. The book is profusely illustrated; it will be followed by a
second volume which will list and describe the county historical records
which have survived: those at the Hall of Records, in the courthouses
and elsewhere.
