ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS 11
A second vacancy occurred in Program 2 when John P. Hively resigned
October 16, 1956. He was replaced on October 24 by Mrs. Lois Green Clark.
PROGRAM 3.
For some years now the number of replacements in the Archival Division
has remained at our all-time minimum. We have not been so fortunate, how-
ever, in our new Records Management Division. Since this program was initi-
ated, in 1953, several large states have undertaken the care of current records
as part of their archival program, and competition for the few trained indivi-
duals available has taken on an air of desperation. To make our problem even
more difficult, American industry is actively recruiting its records officers
from state and federal agencies. Last year we lost our Public Examiner, John
T. Caton, to the new records management program of the State of Illinois
and Thomas Wilds to the records division of Union Carbide and Carbon Corp-
oration. Each man received an increase in salary of approximately $2,000.
Mr. Caton, who resigned December 25, 1956, was replaced the next day by
Jackson S. Saunders of the University of Oklahoma Archives; and Mr. Wilds,
who resigned October 26, 1956, was replaced February 6, 1957, by George
W. Straubinger, Jr., formerly Librarian of the United States Senate.
The position which Mr. Weatherly vacated in order to transfer to Pro-
gram 2 was filled by Miss Irma B. Ray of the Virginia State Library on August
8, 1956.

chives and, in January 1957, was appointed chairman of the Committee on
Preservation Methods. Mr. Beach served as chairman of the Committee on

oline County Historical Society at Greensboro. The subject of his talk was "A
