ACCESSIONS
Through the generous cooperation of Mr. Nelson J. Molter, Law
Librarian of the State Library, we received during the past year two
volumes of great historical importance. One of them, the Convention
Journal for August 14 — November 11, 1776, contains the proceedings
of the Convention that drew up and adopted the first constitution of the
State. The other, the Senate Journal for 1811-1813, contains the proceedings
of the Senate of Maryland at a significant period in American history. Printed
copies of these journals were already on our shelves, but we are, of course,
gratified to have the originals.
Another interesting item received during the year is the Ledger of the
City of Annapolis covering the period 1761-1775 and 1785-1788. Accounts
for the payment of the salaries of public officers, for repairing the town
fence, for rebuilding the gatehouse and other similar items are found in
this ledger. It was discovered in the back of the safe in the City Clerk's
Office. We can only speculate as to how the Assessor's Returns for Calvert
County for 1782 came to be .in the same safe.
The remainder of Governor William Preston Lane's correspondence,
covering the biennium 1949-1950, was transferred to our stacks.
A large number of land records were also received from the Clerk
of the Superior Court of Baltimore City. These are originals which were
in bad condition and had been replaced by photostatic copies made on the
cameras in the Clerk's Office. In our last report we cited Chapter 37 of
the Acts of 1951 which permits the Clerk to destroy the originals if they
