ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS 31
ACCESSIONS
Several extensive collections of probate records were received during
the past year. They were transferred from the offices of the Registers of
Wills of Talbot, Cecil and Prince George's Counties and in each instance
date back to the seventeenth century. Our program of transferring to the
Hall of Records all land record volumes dating before 1788 and replacing
them with bound photostat copies is now nearing completion. The land
records transferred this year from Talbot, Montgomery and Cecil com-
pleted the program in those counties. The Maryland Veterans' Housing
Commission was abolished on March 31, 1950, and one of its last acts was
to transfer its records to the Hall of Records. Since none of these records
was more than three years old, the Archivist had no choice but to accept
them. They could not be destroyed; they could not remain in the custody
of any other office because the functions of the defunct office were aban-
doned rather than transferred to some other agency. In due time most of
them should be destroyed.
