MICROFILM OF COUNTY RECORDS
In my Annual Reports for the fiscal years 1947 and 1948, I advised
you that steady progress was being made by the Genealogical Society of
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in microfilming certain
of the county records of Maryland through the year 1850. I am glad to
report that this project is now complete. It includes all land and marriage
records from the offices of the Clerks of Court and all Wills, Inventories,
Accounts, Bonds and Proceedings of the Orphans" Courts from the offices
of the Registers of Wills. All relevant indexes were also filmed. The
quantity of film is enormous, 130,000 feet, of which over half was made
during the past year. The collection requires over half an alcove to house,
and as our circulation report will show, it is proving to be extremely useful.
The films which were delivered to the Hall of Records lacked reels,
and it has required a good deal of time to reel them so that they could be
used. We have progressed in this work to the point where only one county,
Howard, and part of Baltimore City remain to be done. In addition, we
have labeled the cardboard cartons in which the films are stored on the
shelves and we are preparing a card catalogue for the whole collection
so that any reel may be made available in a few moments.
The importance of this collection is obvious. Students may now con'
suit at the Hall of Records every county record of importance from the
erection of the county, through 1850; moreover, should any county record
earlier than this last date be lost, it could be recreated in photographic
form. With the abstracts in the Land Office we now have security for
every county right up to the present insofar as the land records are con'
cerned. Unfortunately, we could not duplicate the records of the Registers
