ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS 9

She resigned July 17, 1946. Every effort had been made, includ-
ing advertising in the local newspaper, to find a successor during
the thirty days prior to Mrs. Pledger's resignation. From July 17
to September 9, Miss Martha Suit, who was already an employee
of the Hall of Records, substituted as Secretary. On the latter
date Mrs. Catharine M. Phillips was appointed. She held the
position until March 15,1947, when she resigned, in turn, to accept
a more lucrative place at the Postgraduate School. The position
was then given to Mrs. Ruby D. Bauder, who had previously been
employed otherwise. Mrs. Bauder stayed until May 31. Then it
was necessary to ask Miss Suit to substitute again. Miss Suit
finished out the fiscal year, but shortly thereafter she resigned
to be married, and Mrs. Judith Palmquist, who also was on the
staff in another capacity, was asked to take over.

The case of the Senior Assistant Librarian was a similar
one. To take the place of Dr. Elisabeth Hartsook, who had re-
signed a few days before the end of the previous fiscal year,
Mrs. Beulah McLaughlin was appointed on August 5. She re-
signed the next February 15, and on February 21 Miss Elizabeth
W. Meade was appointed. Miss Meade resigned June 1, and the
position is still vacant at this writing.

In addition to these changes mentioned above, Miss Lulu V.
Ebaugh resigned on August 31, 1946, and Mrs. Judith Palm-
quist was appointed April 28, 1947.

It is with deep regret that I report the death, on December
20, of Albert E. Graf, who had been a member of the mainte-
nance staff since 1937. His long service at the Hall of Records
and his thorough knowledge of all the machinery which was
necessary for its functioning made him invaluable. Benjamin
Brown, one of the original watchmen, was retired on February
15, 1947, because of illness. The new watchmen are Leonard R.
Stinchcomb and Charles W. Heller.

Mrs. Perdella Brown, who had been appointed to the main-
tenance staff by the Board of Public Works in 1935, died during
