10 EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT

proper. Typical accessions numbers appear like the following: D 105;
G 31(2), Only the completion of a card index now in progress will
make these materials readily available to researchers.

FINDING MEDIA
Printed

Calendar of the Black Books. While the manuscript of this volume
had been given to the printer in the previous year, it was not completed
and distributed until the early part of this year. Its contents are described
in the Seventh Annual Report o j the Archivist.

Catalogue of Archival Material, Hall of Records. This volume was
also distributed during this fiscal year. Copies of the Catalogue and the
Calendar may be purchased from the Hall of Records.

Seventh Annual Report of the Archivist of the Hall of Records,
State of Maryland, for the fiscal year October I, 1941 to September
30, 1942.

Typewritten Indexes

Testamentary Proceedings. This enormous card index has finally
been opened for the use of researchers; it is now being checked with
the originals for omissions in the volume indexes from which the card
index was made,

Provincial Court Judgments. The period indexed progressed from
1707 to 1719. It will be recalled that this is not an index to cases but
to all names appearing in the record. An index to cases exists already.

PRESERVATION AND REPAIR

Reckoned only by the number of pages treated, the output of the
Repair Department decreased by half over that of the previous fiscal
year. This decrease wasl due for the most part to the program we had
adopted at the beginning of the year in order to cope with an acute
shortage of materials. In previous years we had disposed of more
material than labor, and, consequently we had laminated and crepe-
lined many volumes which while not yet in very bad condition threatened
to become so because of constant use. This work was more "preserva-
tion" than "repair," This year with conditions reversed we concen-
trated on volumes in truly deplorable state so that our workers might
be most profitably employed with the least expenditure of materiais.
At this writing materials for lamination are still not available to as but
there is hope that some will be made so in the near future,
