ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS 9
burden has been put on us, but already the photographic facilities
of the Hall of Records are being taxed to keep up with this new
work. The law permitting destruction under certain circumstances
is good; however there is no room at the Hall of Records for most
of the records of modern agencies which should be preserved and
we have already had to ask the Board of Public Works to provide
space elsewhere for storage purposes. The request has been granted,
but this is not a satisfactory arrangement in all respects for it be-
comes increasingly costly to administer records outside the building
and the responsibility of absentee guardianship is great.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
An extraordinary sum of $15,000 for the purchase of equipment
was made available to the Hall of Records from the General Bond
Issue of 1939. Of this sum $9,538.04 was expended during the fiscal
year 1939-1940 (for an itemized account of this expenditure see the
Archivist's report for 1939-1940) leaving a balance of $5,461.96
which the Board of Public Works was kind enough to carry forward
to the new year. During the fiscal year an additional $5,418.16 was
spent as follows:
Barrow Laminator ........................$3,500.00
Snead Open-Bar Adjustable Shelves........ 1,450.00
2-Cell Syphon Print Washer............... 153.62
Recordak Film File Cabinet............... 87.50
Recordak Enlarger ....................... 227.04
$5,418.16
Balance.................................. $43.80
Of this balance approximately $30.00 has been set aside for a
paper cutter for the photoduplication department which has been
ordered but not delivered.
