ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS 27

jointly by both offices. The Hall was assisted in this purchase by the
generosity of the Land Commissioner, Mr. Henry W. Cord, and the
Chief Clerk of the Land Office, Mr. Arthur Trader, who made available
to the Hall of Records a credit of $450.00 which had been allowed on the
old camera. The Hall also installed a Model D Microfile Recordak
Camera and a Micro-News microfilm reader, so that it is now equipped
to make microfilm reproductions of its own records as well as to use
films made here or purchased elsewhere. For the reading of old manu-
scripts, where the ink has become too faded to be seen, a Hanovia Ultra
Violet Lamp has been purchased. Suitable tables and other accessories
to these new installations have been designed and purchased.

In addition to the usual orders for photostats of materials in the
Hall amounting this year to $230 the following large jobs were done
for the Hall itself:

1. Index to Anne Arundel County Deeds. 750 pp.

2. List of materials in the Rainbow Series, 386 pp.

3. Guide to vital statistics records in the counties of Maryland, 21 pp.

4. St. Margaret's Parish Register, 300 pp.

5. City of Annapolis Council Proceedings Liber B. 60 pp.

6. Galloway Papers, 29 letters.
Microfilm

1. Three Port of Entry Books from the Maryland Historical Society and the
two in possession of the Hall of Records were put in film, 1.000 pp.

2. Test Roll for exhibition purposes illustrating the types of materials at
the Hall of Records as well as the possibilities of the microfilm process, 400 pp.

In addition the Hall of Records has photostated for the Archives
Commission of the Maryland Historical Society all the materials for a
forthcoming volume of Proceedings of the Assembly.

The photographic facilities are shared by the Land Office and a
great deal of work is also done for other State offices as well as for
private persons in Annapolis. The state offices do not pay in cash
for these services and the private business is all handled because of long
custom, through the Land Office.

During the coming year it is expected that the photostat operator
will be occupied almost entirely with the photographing of county records
to be placed in courthouses whence the originals have been removed to
the Hall of Records.

BINDING

The problem of binding manuscript records is still unsolved. Send-
ing materials to Baltimore is, of course, inconvenient as well as risky.
