checked and new cards prepared wherever necessary.

RECEPTION AND ARRANGEMENT

When the Hall of Records opened official ly on October 1, 1935
it already had in its vaults the very large collection which had been
transferred from the Court of Appeals. Shortly thereafter, there
came another large group of records from the Land Office and within
the next two years a great collection from the Maryland Historical
Society and the Land Records of Baltimore and Anne Arundel
Counties. Only a small part of this material could be put on the
shelves ready for use. The rest had to be "serviced." Ideally this
would mean that each volume would be identified, accessioned and
catalogued. It might also have to be indexed. The individual paper
had to be unfolded, placed in a jute folder, identified, arranged and
indexed, then placed in a box and put on the shelves. All of the ma-
