Nothing of Interest has been discovered concerning
Hayes' career as customs inspector; his name appears
on the manuscript records of the Baltimore Customs
House In connection with routine inspections, but that
is all.

Hayes continued as an employee of the Customs
House until his death on September 30, 1822. His
obituary referred to him as "an old and respected
inhabitant of this city", and stater3 that he had "left
three childred to lament the loss of a worthy parentn.41
He was buried in Westminster Cemetery, where a monu-
ment still stands to his memory.

His three children, James, John, and Phebe - his

wife, Mrs. Belinda Hayes had died in 181842 - by the

terms of their father's will,43 fell heir, except for
a few minor bequests, to an estate valued at $11,082.58,
including the residence in Gough Street, Fell's Point,
and stock of the United States government, Baltimore
banks, and turnplkea leading out of Baltimore.

John Hayes' life was quiet, and he left few clues
which throw light on his personality. He was a good
printer - as proved by the excellent productions of

his press, and the length of time he continued in the
