respectively.)

Late in 1801 Hayes sold his printing apparatus to
Charles Prentiss and John Cole, who began publication

of the newspaper, the Republican; or, Anti-Democrat

on January 1, 1802. In one of their first issues
Prentiss and Cole advertised for the custom of mer-

an inducement, the statement that they had

purchased the excellent and variegated print-

The Baltimore Directory lists John Hayes as a
printer through 1802. In the directory for 1803 he
is a "gentleman", in 1804 "late printer", then
"gentleman" again through 1808. On March 20, 1806,
Rev. James Inglis, castor of the First Presbyterian
Church, married Hayes to Bellinda Riddle.38 On July
22, 1808, Hayes received a temporary appointment as
customs inspector in the Baltimore Customs House;39
and the next city directory which was issued, the one
for 1810/12, duly recorded him as "revenue officer".

The position was made permanent on October 1, 1815.40
