by the copartnership, but should have the benefit of
all debts paid to it.8
Due to difficulties of transoceanic commerce, or
other causes, it was not until May 24, 1785, that the
Gazette appeared with new ornamental types in the head-
ing, and larger, clearer cuts in the advertisements.
Killen, now established in Delaware, probably received
the inventoried articles about that time.
Hayes continued publication of the Maryland
Gazette, as well as numerous books, pamphlets and
broadsides, until January 6, 1792, when he announced
that from that date he would discontinue the publi-
cation of his nowspaper, but in the meantime would
receive and execute, on the most reasonable
terms,, such printing-work as they [the public]
may be pleased to employ him in.9
Hayes' activities for the next two years cannot
be determined, for no imprints from his press are ex-
tant for this period. He may have engaged in some
real estate activities, for in 1792 his name appears
several times in the land records of Baltimore County
in connection with a tract of land known as "Eagle's
Nest", "cast side of Patapsco falls", which he pur-
chased from Philip Edwards on May 22, 1792.10
