ture, arts & sciences, Sec. &c. - whether it may
have for its object the advantage, and aggrand-
izement of the United States at large, or only
the partial and local benefit of an individual
state. - Nor shall the less profitable, though
highly pleasing, walks of literature be wholly
unfrequented; as he will occasionally variegate
and enliven his pages with sprigs of biography,
anecdote, wit, humour, and pleasantry. The
muses, also shall be attended to; original
productions of merit will always obtain a pref-
erence; on failure of these, recourse will gen-
erally be given to approved modern European and
American publications.54

He promised to maintain strict impartiality in the con-
flict of political opinions, which he said were "in-
separable from a free government." He would thankfully
receive advertisements; and he promised that if his
paper should meet with the approbation of the public,
he would make every effort "to rivet that favour."
In the same issue, he advertised for a journeyman
printer who had a competent knowledge of the business.
In April, a notice was inserted that

the office of the Maryland Herald is removed
to the shop lately occupied by Mr. Frederick
Millar, apothecary, next door to Doctor R.
Pindel's near the Court-house.55

The newspaper office remained at that location only a
year, for "that large and convenient store-room with
a front cellar" was offered for rent as an excellent
stand for a store or mechanical business; and the
aewapaper announced its removal, possibly for financial
