Little is known of Phebe Grieves1 later life.
Mary Grieves, probably the daughter of Thomas and Phebe,
married John M. Buchanan, editor of the Cumberland Ad-
vocate, on May 10, 1825.5S Phebe Grieves died at the
age of fifty-seven, October 9, 1822, and is buried
beside Stewart Herbert in St. John's Episcopal cemetery,
Hagerstown.
Thomas Grieves and the Second English Press of
Hagerstown. - On March 9, 1797, the first issue of the
Maryland Herald and Elizabethtown Advertiser was pre-
sented to the citizens of Washington county by Thomas
Grieves. In his address "To the Public" the new editor
promised to publish the paper once a week, "with a neat
type, on good paper... on Thursday at an early hour."
His subscription price would be two dollars, half of
which was payable in advance or three months from the
commencement of the paper, and the balance semi-annu-
ally in advance. Concerning the content, the editor
stated that ,
Besides the usual selection of intelligence,
foreign and domestic, which constitutes the prin-
ciple contents of the generality of newspapers,
the editor of the Maryland Herald will sedulously
seek out whatever may tend to improve or extend
the interests of commerce, agriculture, manufac-
