notation is a matter for conjecture, as is its having
been printed in Baltimore. The copper plate engraving,
however, suggests notes of music, and its title
suggests that it was compiled and published locally;
so until further evidence is found, the Baltimore Col-
lection of Church Music may be assumed to be Balti-
more's first musical imprint.

Music printing continued with the publication in
1793 of John Asplund's New Collection, probably a com-
pilation of church music;5 and since Andrew Law,
psalmodist and one of the first American writers on
music,6 resided in Baltimore for some time during the
1790's, his Musical Magazine, which began publication
in Cheshire, Connecticut in 1791, may have included

one or more issues published in Baltimore before 1795.8
These publications are still unlocated, and it may be
that they contain no musical notation; but from their
character it seems probable that they do.

Joseph Carr, Music Printer. - Joseph Carr, a music
publisher from London, came to Baltimore in 1794, and
from that date Maryland had a share in music publishing
of considerable quantity. He was head of the family

of musicians and publishers which were established in
