lished Ms printing office in Baltimore, Johann Gruber,
another Pennsylvanian, was setting up Hagerstown's first
German press.

Christopher Jackson and John Smith; the Second
Attempt to Establish Sunday Journalism in the United
States. Christopher Jackson was probably born in
Westmoreland County, England. It is not known where he
received his training in printing, when or under what
circumstances he came to the United States; but he
appears to have set up a press in Baltimore late in
1795, or during the first months of 1796, during
which year he was engaged by George Keatinge to print
a variety of pamphlets.

Hie press at No. 67 Market-Street appears several
times in advertisements during the year 1796. He pub-
lished on June 27 an item of local interest, A Plan of
the. Review for the Fourth of July.124 On September 6,
he offered his printing office for sale "on very mod-
erate terms", and listed his apparatus in some detail:

font of Brevier, ' 1 ditto Double Pica,

ditto Long Primer, ' 1 ditto Script,

ditto Pica, ' 1 ditto Double English,

ditto English, ' 1 ditto French Cannon,

ditto Great Primer, ' 1 ditto Five Line Pica,

and a quantity of large letter, checks, etc. with
two printing presses, chases and furniture125
