Gazette of Boston from June 5, 1787 through November
11, 1788,31 or with the publisher of the Oracle of
Dauphin of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, from October 20,
1792 until November of 1793.32 From the point of
view of time, it is certainly possible that it was
the same man; from Edwards' announcement that he had
"procured an experienced assistant"33 it is quite
likely.

Alien had arrived in Baltimore not later than
January, 1795, had set up a printing office on Bond
Street, Fells Point. There he issued proposals for
publishing a newspaper, the Fell's Point Te1egraphe
to be issued on a quarto sheet three times per week
on the logical grounds that a paper whose publication
days coincided with the coming of the mall (and
with it, the news), whose price (two dollars and a
half, yearly) would be cheaper than that of a daily
paper, which would specialize in ship news, would
be acceptable to the public, especially the resi-

dents of Pells Point.34 He sot his first publica-
tion date for February 23, 179535, but was not able

to publish Ms newspaper until March 2, on which date

chusetts (Boston) p. 253.
