namental rule] | Annapolis: | Printed by Frederick Green, | Printer to the State, [1788.]
8vo. [A]-B2, B-E4, F3. aa leaves, last leaf blank.
Pages:[1]-[5], 6-42.
Leaf measures: 71/4 z x 3/4 inches.
Dedicated to George Washington. Contains a detailed examination of the Constitution refuting the arguments of the
Anti-Federalists. It was written in December, according to the author's note on the title page, and was announced in the
Maryland Gazette on January 31,1788, as just published. The author expressed his regrets in the advertisement that he could
not five away copies of it.
Many years after the publication of this tract when he was gathering together the pamphlets he had written during this
period, Hanson wrote: "The last pamphlet in this volume [now at the Maryland Historical Society] is the only pamphlet on
the subject [of the Constitution], which was noticed by the English reviewers. It had great celebrity and effect in Maryland
and Virginia, Further its influence did not extend. The fact was, that men of great fame in Philadelphia and New York had
written or begun to write on the subject. Particularly Mr. Hamilton (as it was said) with the assistance of Mr. Jay and Mr.
Maddison [sic] wrote the Federalist. Aristides against three such names could not succeed. However the Federalist was not
completed until almost every state in the Union had decided on the constitution; and therefore be its excellence what it may,
it could have little weight in recommending the constitution ..."
It was reviewed in the Analytical Review and the Monthly Review, Vol. 78 (1788), pp. 665-666. Reprinted in Magazine
of History, Extra Number, No. 186 (1933).
