CHAP. CXI.

An Act to authorise the Governor and Council of Maryland to appoint one
Justice of the Levy Court for each Election District of Washington
County.

CHAP. 111.


Passed Feb 26, 1827

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the governor and council of Maryland he and they are
hereby authorised and required, to appoint, annually, seven per-
sons to act as justices of the levy court of Washington county,
not more than one of whom shall reside in the same election
district; and the persons so appointed shall have and exercise all
the powers at present vested in the levy courts of the several
counties of this state.

2. And be it enacted, That in case of the death, resignation,
removal out of the county, or other disqualification, of one or
more of the justices appointed as aforesaid, it shall be the duty
of the clerk of the county where such vacancy or vacancies
shall exist, forthwith to certify the same to the executive of the
state, who are thereupon required, at their next meeting there-
after, to fill such vacancy or vacancies.

3. And be it enacted, That all acts, or parts of acts of as-
sembly, heretofore passed, contrary to, or inconsistent with, the
provisions of this act, be and the same are hereby repealed.

CHAP. CXII.
An Act to provide for the payment of the Bailiffs of Prroce-George's Coun-
ty Court.

Passed Feb 26, 1827

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the justices of the levy court of Prince-George's county,
be and they are hereby authorised and required, annually to
levy on the assessable property of said county, a sum of money
sufficient to pay the bailiffs of the county court of said county.

2. And be it enacted, That the sum of money, when so le-
vied and collected, shall be deposited in the Planters Bank of
Prince-George's County, and a certificate, signed by the clerk
of the county court, expressing the number of days which any
bailiff may have served, and the sum due to him for such ser-
vice, shall be a sufficient authority to the cashier of said bank
to pay the amount so specified in the said certificate.

3. And be it enacted, that the said justices of the levy
court shall annually settle and balance their account with the
said bank, and the surplus, if any, to be applied by the said
justices to the use and benefit of said county.
4. And be it enacted, That until the said sum of money
shall be levied and collected, the justices of the levy court of
said county, shall, and they are hereby authorised, to defray
the allowance to bailiffs of the said county court out of any
money or monies deposited in the Planters Bank of Prince-
George's county, to be drawn therefrom by a certificate signed
by the clerk of the county, in the manner above directed.

county court shall be entitled to the sum of two dollars each,
per day, for their services and no more.
