o&jects of this act, and at their pleasure to remove them, or any
of them; that they, or a majority of them, shall have power to
determine the compensation to be allowed to the commissioners
appointed under this act, to take the stock of the company, and
locate the northern section of the canal, and also the compen-
sation of all the engineers, officers, agents or servants, employ-
ed by the company, and to adjust, settle and pass, all accounts
against the company, and give orders for the payment of the
same, upon the treasurer of the company; and they, or a majo-
rity of them, shall have power to prescribe the qualifications of
the various officers or agents, appointed by them, or under
their direction, and that they shall require of the treasurer of
the company, an office bond, with sufficient penalty and surety,
and may require him to renew the same whenever they doubt
the sufficiency of the bond given, and on failure to renew it,
may appoint another in his stead; and in all cases where an
officer or agent appointed by them refuses or neglects to qualify
in the manner prescribed by them, may appoint another in his
stead; that they, or a majority of them, shall by some general
rule direct the manner and evidence of transfers of stocks in
said company, and shall have power to pass all by-laws, which
may be deemed necessary or useful in order to the enjoyment
and exercise of the rights hereby conferred upon said compa-
ny; provided only, that such by-laws shall not be contrary to
the laws of the United States, or the laws of Pennsylvania or
Maryland, or the provisions of this charter.

11. And be it enacted, That the said directors shall each he
entitled to two dollars per day for each days attendance at the
meetings of the directors, and they, or a majority of them, may
allow the president of said company such annual salary, not-ex-
ceeding one thousand dollars per annum , as they may deem
proper.

12. And be it enacted, That the said Pennsylvania and Ma-
ryland canal, shall be divided into two sections, to be respec-
tively denominated the northern and southern sections of said
canal; that the first or northern section shall begin, in connec-
tion with the Pennsylvania state canal at its termination on the
river Susquehanna, at or near the mouth of Swatara creek, and
shall terminate at tide water in the river Susquehanna; and the
second or southern section shall begin, in connexion with the
northern section, and shall terminate at or within the city of
Baltimore; that the northern section shall be commenced within
two, and completed within five years, after the final passage of
this act by the legislature of Pennsylvania and Maryland, and
the southern section shall be commenced within three, and com-
pleted within live years, after the completion of the northern
section, and that the northern section shall be wholly completed
tefore the southern section is commenced; that if the northern
section is not commenced, or being commenced, is not com-
pleted at the periods above respectively assigned for its com-
mencement and completion, then all the rights, powers and pri-
vileges, of said company, shall cease and be utterly null and
void; and that if the southern section is not commenced, or be-
ing commenced, is net completed at the periods above respec-
