Leave was granted committee on the Judiciary to intro-
duce a bill to provide for the relief of the securities of Alex-
ander Knott, late sheriff of Caroline county.

Mr. Goldsborough presented the petition of sundry citi-
zens asking for relief of the security of Alexander Knott, late
sheriff of Caroline county ;

Which was referred to the committee on the Judiciary.

Mr. Gordon, from the majority of the committee on the
Judiciary, reported unfavorably upon a bill entitled an act to
repeal section forty-nine of article sixty-six, in relation to
free negroes remaining out of the State more than thirty
days, and section fifty of the same article, in relation to the
granting of permits by the Orphans' Courts to free negroes
to remain out of and return into this State for a period lon-
ger than thirty clays.

Mr. Chaplain, from the minority of the Judiciary Commit-
tee, made a favorable report upon the bill entitled, an act
to amend the forty-ninth and fiftieth sections relating to free
negroes, of Article LXVIth of the Code of Public General
Laws, and moved to substitute it for the majority report.

Mr. Pitts moved to recommitted the bills.

Pending the consideration of which,

Mr. Brining moved the previous question ;

Which was sustained.

The question then being, "shall the main question be now
put?"

It was sustained.

The question then recurred upon recommiting the bills,

It was concurred in, and the bills re-committed.

Mr. Chaplain offered the following :

Ordered, That it be entered upon the journal that Mr.
Jones, of Talbot, is detained from the deliberations of this
House,, by sickness in his family ;

Which was adopted.

Mr. Maxwell, from the committee on Claims, reported fa-
vorably upon a bill entitled, an act appropriating a sum of
money to pay Samuel J. Pentz, (owner of the steamer Pio-
neer,) William H. Hamilton, John Bird, J. C. Bush, James
Cook, William Lynch, John Bradshaw and E. S. Thomas;

Which was read the first time.
On motion of Mr. Maxwell,

The bill was ordered to a second reading.
