will probated May 26, 1756. LAND: one tract of
250 acres in Somerset County, which had been
in arrears since 1734, and 400 acres in Accomack
County, Virginia, where he had gone to live after
1741/42. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: The inventory
of William Whittington (?-1769), son of William
(by 1719-ca. 1740/41), listed a silver cane. The
inventory of William Wittington (ca. 1650-1720),
the direct antecedent of both of these Williams,
listed "a silver headed cane."

WICKES (WEEKES), JOSEPH (ca. 1620-1692).
BORN. ca. 1620. IMMIGRATED: in 1650, as a free
adult probably from Virginia. RESIDED, in Kent
County; Talbot County by 1669; Kent County
again by 1676. MARRIED probably second, by 1656,
Mary Hart well, formerly of Virginia. MARRIED
probably third, Ann, widow of Benjamin Ran-
dall, daughter of Thomas Hynson (1620-ca. 1667/
68). Ann married third, St. Leger Codd (ca. 1634-
ca. 1707/8). Her brothers were John Hynson (?-
1705); Charles Hynson (1663-1711); and Thomas
(?-1679). Her sister was Grace. CHILDREN. SONS:
Joseph (?-1704/5); Benjamin; and Samuel (?-
1732), a justice of Kent County, 1716-1720, who
married in 1706 Frances (1688/89-1736), daugh-
ter of Simon Wilmer (ca. 1656-1699). NATURAL
SON: Joseph Hartwell (?-1656). DAUGHTER:
Martha, who married Michael Miller (1675-?),
son of Michael Miller (ca. 1644-1699). NATURAL

DAUGHTER OR STEPDAUGHTER: Mary Hartwell.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT: Samuel was his son by
his wife Ann. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: lit-
erate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant, prob-
ably Anglican with Puritan leanings. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: no title on arrival; Mr., by
1651; pioneer settler of Eastern Shore; charged
with having a bastard by Mary Hartwell, whom
he married later that year, 1656; served seven
terms as burgess, but never played an active lead-
ership role in the legislature; close associate of
Thomas Hynson (1620-ca. 1667/68) and a rival of
the Ringgold family. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE:
planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE.
Assembly, Kent County, 1654, 1657; Lower
House, Kent County, 1659/60, Talbot County,
1669 (Aggrievances), 1671-1674/75; Kent County,
1676-1682, 1682-1684. LOCAL OFFICES: justice,
Kent County, 1651-1660, 1671-1683 (quorum);
deputy surveyor, Kent County, in office 1654;
coroner, Talbot County, 1670. MILITARY SERV-
ICE: captain, by 1654; major, by 1682. STANDS ON
PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: pledged loyalty to the

commonwealth government in England, 1652;
barred from office and elections for seven years
for his role in Fendall's Rebellion, 1660/61; dis-
missed from justiceship for misbehavior in office,
1683; opposed Revolution of Protestant Associ-
ators, 1689. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT
FIRST ELECTION: 400 acres in Kent County. WEALTH
AT DEATH. DIED: will probated April 26, 1692, in
Kent County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, at least
£1,099.11.10 (including 2 servants, 13 slaves, and
books). LAND, probably ca. 1,500 acres.

WICKLIFF (WHITCLIFF), DAVID (?-ca. 1643).
BORN: probably in England. IMMIGRATED, in 1636,
as a free adult. RESIDED: in St. George's Hundred,
St. Mary's County. MARRIED in 1642 Jane. She
subsequently married ca. 1650 Henry Brooks.

PRIVATE CAREER. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Prot-

estant. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Wickliff's
home was the gathering place for Assembly elec-
tions in St. George's Hundred; Mr., by 1638/39,
but not regularly thereafter. OCCUPATIONAL PRO-
FILE: planter, 1637/38. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLA-
TIVE SERVICE: Assembly, St. George's Hundred,
St. Mary's County, 1638/39, present 1641/42, St.
George's Hundred, St. Mary's County, 1642A
(possibly Laws), present 1642B. WEALTH DURING

LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 50 acres.
WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: by June 1643. LAND: 50

WIGHT (WHITE, WRIGHT), JOHN (?-1705).
BORN: probably in England. IMMIGRATED: prob-
ably ca. 1680, as a free adult with his wife and
four daughters. RESIDED. Calvert (later became
Prince George's) County. MARRIED first, Mary (?-
by 1687), daughter of John Gittings. MARRIED sec-
ond, Ann (?-1726), widow of Thomas Gantt (?-
ca. 1691). CHILDREN. SON: John, who married Ann,
daughter of Thomas Greenfield (ca. 1649-1715).
STEPSONS: Thomas Gantt (?-1765); Edward Gantt.
DAUGHTERS: Gratiana; Susannah; Elizabeth;
Mary; Margery (?-1783), who married first,
Thomas Sprigg (?-1725), son of Thomas Sprigg
(by 1670-by 1739), and second, Joseph Belt (ca.
1680-1761); Mary, who married Jeremiah Belt
(1698-?), son of John Belt (?-1698); and Fielder,
who married John Powell. STEPDAUGHTERS: Eliz-
abeth Gantt (?-1718); Ann Gantt, who married
John Bradford (?-1725/26). PRIVATE CAREER. ED-
